YORK – Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty reports the arrest of a Livingston County resident on a felony charge following an investigation by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office.

On October 31st, 2026 at approximately 11:37 pm, Sheriff’s Deputies responded to Main Street in Piffard for the report of a physical fight outside an establishment involving multiple people. Sheriff’s Deputies arrived on scene and conducted an investigation into the altercation.

It is alleged that during the altercation, 45-year-old Joshua Costa from Piffard struck another patron over the head with a glass bottle causing physical injury to the victim’s head and face. It was further alleged that Costa then punched another victim in the face. Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Costa and charged him with one count of felony Assault in the Second Degree and one count of Harassment in the Second Degree.

Costa was transported and turned over to Central Booking Deputies at the Livingston County Jail for arrest processing and pre-arraignment detention. Costa was later arraigned at the Livingston County Centralized Arraignment Part (LCCAP) at the Livingston County Jail before the Town of Springwater Justice Johnson. The Judge did remand Costa to the Custody of the Sheriff without bail due to his two prior felony convictions.

The Livingston County Public Defender’s Office was present and represented Costa at the court arraignment for his defense. The Livingston County District Attorney’s Office was also present to represent the People.
