LIVONIA – Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty reports the arrest of a Steuben County resident on felony Driving While Intoxicated charges following an investigation by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office.

On October 5th, 2026 at approximately 1:40 am, Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the area of the Rodeway Inn in the Town of Livonia for the check the welfare of an individual inside a vehicle, appearing to be passed out and slumped over.

Deputies arrived on location and made contact with the vehicle and the operator, who was identified as 33-year-old Matthew Sleight of Arkport NY.  During the initial encounter with Sleight, Deputies suspected that he was possibly under the influence of alcohol.  Sergeant Menzo Peck conducted a DWI investigation, which included the performance of standardized field sobriety tests.  At the completion of the investigation, Sleight was taken into custody for DWI.

Sleight was offered the opportunity to submit to a chemical breath test to determine his blood alcohol content (BAC).  Sleight did ultimately refuse to submit to the chemical test.

A records check showed that Sleight did have a prior conviction for DWI in 2022, making this arrest a felony.

Sleight was charged with felony Driving While Intoxicated.

Sleight was transported and turned over to Central Booking Deputies at the Livingston County Jail for arrest processing and pre-arraignment detention.  He was later arraigned at the Livingston County Centralized Arraignment Part (LC-CAP) at the Livingston County Jail before Town of West Sparta Justice Mahany.  The Judge did release Sleight on his own recognizance as the offenses do not qualify for bail under the NYS Bail Reform Act.

The Livingston County Public Defender’s Office was present and represented Sleight at the court arraignment for his defense.  The Livingston County District Attorney’s Office was also present to represent the People.
