WEST SPARTA – Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty reports the arrest of a West Sparta resident on felony charges following an investigation by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office.

On April 2nd, 2026 at approximately 4:30 pm, Sheriff’s Deputy Walker Major was dispatched to the area of Everman Road in the Town of West Sparta for the reported vehicle being operated in an erratic manner.  It was also reported that the vehicle had struck a sign and was disabled, with the operator still in the area.

The Deputy arrived on location and made contact with the operator of the vehicle, who was identified as 37-year-old Matthew Partridge of West Sparta.  The Deputy suspected that Partridge was possibly under the influence of alcohol and attempted to conduct a DWI investigation.  Partridge was uncooperative and refused to cooperate with the investigation.  Partridge was ultimately taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated.

Partridge was offered the opportunity to submit to a chemical test to determine his blood alcohol content (BAC), and did refuse to submit to a chemical breath test.  A NYS DMV check showed that Partridge was operating the vehicle while having a revoked NYS Driver’s License due to a previous refusal to submit to a chemical test.

Partridge was charged with felony Aggravated Unlicensed Operation in the First Degree, Driving While Intoxicated and violations of the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law.

Partridge was transported and turned over to Central Booking Deputies at the Livingston County Jail for arrest processing and pre-arraignment detention.  He was later arraigned at the Livingston County Centralized Arraignment Part (LC-CAP) at the Livingston County Jail before Town of Mt. Morris Justice Ossont.  The Judge did release Partridge on his own recognizance as the charges do not qualify for bail under the NYS Bail Reform Act.

The Livingston County Public Defender’s Office was present and represented Partridge at the court arraignment for his defense.  The Livingston County District Attorney’s Office also appeared to represent the People.
